For almost 30 years, Andy Garvis’s care and compassion for people, competitive nature, and respect for justice have made him a strong and effective advocate for his clients.  Whether defending a criminal charge, supporting an injured client, or assisting with a family dispute, Andy provides his clients with the time and attention they deserve, to truly understand their issues and fight for their rights.

Since 2005, he has served on the federal Criminal Justice Act panel that represents individuals charged with federal crimes in conflict cases. Andy has represented individuals charged with a multitude of charges, including federal and state drugs crimes, such as conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, oxycodone and marijuana, identity theft, defrauding the United States, racketeering charges, bank fraud, uttering in counterfeit currencies, trafficking in counterfeit goods, as well as criminal sexual conduct, assault and child pornography charges. In addition, Andy has represented countless individuals charged with DWI, from misdemeanors to the felony level, not only in criminal court but also in civil proceedings related to driver’s license revocation and cancelation.

In 2007, Andy successfully argued before the Minnesota Supreme Court in State v. Wiltgen, 737 N.W.2d 561 (2007). The case stood for the premise that the state cannot use a properly challenged but un-reviewed license revocation for enhancement to a more serious charge.

Andy has helped those in family law disputes for nearly 30 years who are dealing with divorce, custody, parenting time and spousal maintenance issues, as well as division of assets and debt. These issues can be very stressful and emotionally taxing, and Andy has spent his career helping individuals through this process.

Andy is a member and past president of the Minnesota Society for Criminal Justice, and recently served as vice president of the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers before being elevated to president in April of 2024.

Andy is also on the board of CREATE, Inc., a chemical dependency treatment organization aimed at helping those dealing with addiction issues. Andy has served on its board since 2009 and believes that there are a multitude of different ways to help those in need to deal with addiction. Sometimes we see a “one size fits all” approach to these issues, but CREATE offers unique perspectives in that the organization truly works to guide clients individually through the process.

Andy has been named a Super Lawyer by his peers for the past eight years, carrying on the legacy of his late mentor and law partner, the skilled and wise criminal defense attorney Richard F. Koch. Andy received his bachelor degree from the University of Arizona and graduated cum laude from Gonzaga University School of Law.
